yeah, i'm going to agree with everyone here: the inner suburbs of Pittsburgh are freaking fantastic.

also college towns in new england are good (the nearby public schools tend to be excellent), though 500k may be a bit low there.

+1 grew up there and it is the unicorn you are looking for. Only draw back is not near to coast h and can be gray a lot of the year. But lots to do for kids and excellent schools in the burbs.

If you want to stay in Virginia, consider Virginia Beach for highly rated public schools.

Michigan is likely to end single family zoning in the near future. Would not recommend because SFH neighborhoods in your price range will be very vulnerable to decline from this policy.

Single family zoning is unlikely to be abolished in Ohio or PA.

Wisconsin. Check out Mequon and Cedarburg, possibly Port Washington. Lowish property taxes and great schools. If you want walkable check out Shorewood and Whitefish Bay, although those are in Milwaukee County and have insane property taxes. You'd usually have to jump fast at anything $500K or under. Lots to do on Lake Michigan, so easy to get doctor appointments (compared to DMV), Milwaukee airport is a breeze, although need to go to Ohare for most international travel. Many activities for kids, cheap, clean public pools.

Where is your family located?

You can definitely find good schools and sub-$500K houses in Ohio, look in Shaker Heights, Orange or Solon HS areas in Cleveland, Upper Arlington, Dublin, or New Albany in Columbus, or Sycamore HS, Indian Hill, or Mason HS in Cincinnati.

Property taxes are going to be higher than here, but income tax is less, and property values are less but you get a much bigger house for your money.

North Shore of Chicago, it is generally expensive but you can find some older cheaper homes if you aren't picky. But property taxes will be high
