You can’t just switch up on Jan 1 and undo bad habits and rules that have been in place all year. It only makes sense to begin the policy now. That being said, the teachers who hold firm on it will see great results. I’ve had the best two first days of school in years with it. I have seen kids in the hall with their phone, which is NOT allowed per the policy, and those teachers will continue to fight the battle and lose because they couldn’t be firm and set the expectation on day 1. There is zero downside to it- the kids are talking more and not rushing through stuff to try to sneak their phone and make a pass to go meet their friends in the hall or bathroom since they can’t coordinate.

High schoolers are 100% allowed to have phones in the hallway and at lunch under the current policy. I understand that is likely changing but for now it’s explicitly allowed by the June school board policy.

In the halls during PASSING PERIOD. Not during class. They aren’t allowed to have them in the hall if they’re going to the bathroom, which is when I’m seeing them.

Ha! Well our school basically doesn't allow students to go to the bathroom, and highly discourages it (even before the cell phone thing) so maybe that's why I'm not hearing much about that. Its by far our biggest beef with the school. Good kids who just need to pee or deal with their period are treated like criminals or liars.

This is an LCPS highschool? Would you mind sharing which one? Wondering (and dreading) because I have middle-school age kids.

Reviving this thread intentionally. No change to phone policy at our MS and HS from Dec to Jan.

Middle schooler is supposed to put it in her locker but can text me from her watch if needed. High Schooler is allowed to have it but it has to stay in her bag or in a rack up front (teacher depending) during class. She can use it during lunch and hallway time. It’s really not much change at all from last year.

As mentioned before, the requirements of the new state policy don't have to be in place until January 1, and all the state guidance doesn’t even go out to school districts until the middle of September. What you are seeing now is the LCPS local policy adopted by the school board in June.

Check your LCPS Letter email and there is a link to provide feedback on the new, developing policy if you so choose.

Those little pouches that Youngkin was going on and on about definitely weren't used at our school. The kids have to park them in a door shoe organizer at the front of the class (which is fine by me). I just want to know where the money went because this is not what he parading about.

Because you can bring it. It’s that it will be put into a phone storage thing in each class - we all have one and this is the plan everyone I spoke to at other schools at our countywide PD day said their school is doing. It’s on a charger (in back of room or at teacher desk) or in the phone pockets. It does NOT remain with the students in their backpack. they get it on their way out of class and put it in the pocket again next class. They can have it during class switch, lunch, study hall.

And the Apple Watches and AirPods?
