Any other ideas?

Looking for good food and atmosphere, charm, kid-friendly.

Everyone is assuming this, but are you indeed starting the trip from the DC area?

And your intention is to leave on Friday and return home on Monday?

Agree with Richmond and Pittsburgh. There’s a ton for kids to do in Atlanta (children’s museum, aquarium, puppetry museum with Jim Henson stuff, MLK historical sites, museums, and more). You may be able to find charm depending on where you stay.

OP, are you the one who refuses to go to St. Louis? I love it there, but I love old cities. I will say it doesn’t seem to have much of a cohesive identity. However, there’s more than enough there to do with kids for a long weekend or even longer. There’s nothing anywhere else like The City Museum. How old are your kids?

Take the train to NYC for the novelty.

Go see the Lion King on Broadway. It's magical.

Staten Island Ferry for a quick harbour tour.

Some kind of gimmicky restaurant.

Shop like Harry Potter or Pokemon.

Maybe do a kid's activity in Central Park.

It lands in Canada. Not the US.

Pittsburgh and Richmond are actually both pretty cool in different ways. NYC is another obvious choice.

I’ve only been there a couple times for work and found it very boring. Maybe I went to the wrong spots, but for a “major” city, found it pretty meh.

Miami and Key West--particularly if you can fly directly to the Keys it's doable as a long weekend.

Me? I'd go to Bar Harbor. Do some hiking, eat some lobster, cool off from the heat.

Most of the food in BH is very mediocre.

A good trip could be to fly to Portland and eat well. Rent a car and drive to BH. Fly home from Bangor.

Could also fly home from Bar Harbor if money didn't matter.

I actually found the less fancy lobster shacks are the best.

Maybe Charlottesville? Do some hiking, drink some wine?
