It's a different generation. The kids these days are very coddled, and the idea of independence scares them.

I couldn't wait for the independence and freedom, because I already had plenty of responsibility in my youth.

I received a paper license after taking 'behind the wheel.'

I finished my lass course, the instructor dropped me off, and gave me the paper. I was home alone, but the "shared car" was at the house. So I left a note on the counter for my dad that said "got my license, took the honda to go to the store, will be back at xyz time."

Then I took the keys and just went to the store. I don't remember if I even purchased anything, but I felt it imperative that I seize the opportunity to take the keys and head out alone.

Sure do. Dad took me to the Secretary of State right after school so I could get my DL. Think we went out to dinner afterward. Had a hockey game that night, so I drove Mom's car to the game. Had recently discovered Cream so I remember listening to a Cream album with Badge on it.

I only remember the date because it was my 16th birthday. Also, I got pulled over by the cops the first night I drove.

Yes, also remember the day my brother got his and going out in the car (Dodge Aspen) with him.

I sure do. The day I turned 16. Summer.

I got my license in the early 80s. I have no recollection of it whatsoever.

Same but I’m 49. It was in my actual 16th birthday and I remember driving to a friend’s house as soon as we got home from the DMV.

I remember the test clearly. My state was adding a parallel parking element to the test so I badgered my parents to let me take it before the new requirement.

I remember my joy when I passed and the guy who proctored my test telling me to be careful.

I have no memory of it at all, but I think the license arrived in the mail a week or so later.

Likely not a big memory as my parents drove us everywhere and I grew up in a place where it was a big enough city but one where you couldn't go anywhere without running into someone you knew leaning their head out/asking if you wanted a ride.

I remember it pretty well. I'm older so took my driving test on the closed course at the DMV (Montgomery County.)

Did anyone else take driver's ed during high school? Remember the simulator's?

Yes, but I was 20 and in college.

Yeah but only because it was St. Patrick’s Day and I immediately got drunk on quarter beers and crashed the car into a tree in the lawn

Yes. Was my bday, and when I got the license, that day I filled my mom's car with kids and drove out to lunch from our HS, to White Castle, a place only those who could drive could get to and back in time for the period after lunch.

I remember these would go off over and over again for minutes at a time and nobody in the nearby vicinity would pay attention or look in the direction of the vehicle
