I think since your kids are older & do not need childcare then he is free to make his own individual plans separate from the family.

It isn’t fair, but a lot of men see their priorities as work>personal needs>family and they’ve been socialized to be confident about asserting those priorities. Women mostly aren’t willing to put their kids last, so they always get the short end of the stick if they’re prioritizing kids>family>work>personal needs.
