I was home alone for hours after school starting in 5th grade, so as long as your kid is responsible, I don’t think it’s a big deal.

I think in MD your child needs to be 8. Probably depends on child and circumstances, but 8 seems perfectly appropriate. Why is this in the tween/teen forum?

Typically it seems to be 3rd grade, although our 2nd grader was home for about an hour frequently after school.

My husband worked nights so my kids didn’t come home alone exactly - he was asleep but I guess available in an emergency. This was when my 2 were in 2nd and 4th grade. Also they were together and my oldest was pretty mature.

Alone this didn’t really happen until 4th grade with the youngest when her sister went to middle school and got home later bc of the bus.

At the end of 4th grade we started leaving our almost 10yr old home alone for 30-40 min. during daylight when 7/8 homes on our cul de sac have 1 or both adults working from home.

5th grade was when my oldest child started coming home to an empty house. He’s now in his own living in the Big Apple off campus at NYU.

Age 8 in MoCo for legal home alone for an hour or two or less.

Our oldest didn’t want to, our youngest doesn’t care.

Because that’s the law in Maryland.

We started doing this occasionally with our oldest toward the end of 4th grade, then more regularly in 5th. But of course it depends on the kid, and on what it takes to get home - our bus stop was 2 doors down from our house, which helped.
