We just moved to AU Park and spent 900K on a house and I've been pleasantly suprised at how down to earth our neighbors are. Most of our neighbors are 2 (low 6 figure) income professional couples with kids under 5 (ourselves included). I kind of view places like East Bethesda as the "next step up". I'm wondering (frankly being nosy) how young familes ascend to that level and afford that neighborhood.

Please don't slam me for being jealous/nosy. I'm just genuinely curious what type of people we would have as our neighbors in East Bethesda.



This post kind of cracked me up. We looked at AU Park and East Bethesda and saw AU Park as being $100K to $150K more expensive for comparable houses (original 1940s colonials) but this was 10 years ago. Have things changed that much? Maybe just "newer" McMansions in East Bethesda, but you can buy a nice renovation here for way less than $900K. And few folks here are paying for private school - unlike in AU Park.

There are some retirees and a handful of student group houses, I suppose, that skew the statistics. But by every other measure, it is most certainly on the high end of incomes for the region. We should know - we are one of those couples competing (and losing) on a number of bidding wars in the neighborhood over the last few years.


It is a neighborhood of mixed incomes- many of the families who bought in 7 years ago or more at 300K or less are the government workers, non-profit workers, etc. The newer folks in the $1.8 million dollar homes are developers and lawyers, it seems!

There used to be a lot more diversity in the neighborhood, but there is still some.

We have gay and straight, families, black, white, Asian, international, Latino....nice mix, although predominantly white, and seems to be a good mix of work from home, part time working Moms and Dads, at home, and full time dual earners. No cookie cutter neighborhood.

I love living in E. Bethesda for all reasons above (it has one of the highest "walkability" scores I've seen, at this site http://www.walkscore.com/) but I did want to say that I don't consider the school assignment pattern to be ideal.

Rosemary Hills is a great school (although having the school so far away isn't very convenient for parents or kids), but Bethesda Elem. is K-5, so when the kids are done at RH they are supposed to join the kids who have already been going to BE for 3 years. The alternative is to try and waive into the other schools in the cluster that go 3-6 (or to waive into BE from the beginning).

Yes, the Labor Day picnic is on September 1 from 2 - 5 at Lynnbrook Park.

No rats that I've seen. I've lived in East Bethesda for 15 years. I did see a mouse once or twice, running behind a dumpster behind one of the restaurants on Wisc. Avenue. But I've had more sightings of foxes (over 1/2 dozen sightings) and raccoons (too many to count) over the years.

I'm not aware of any rat problems in East Bethesda. However, I have seen sometimes foxes and racoons in the middle of the night.

What is the rat situation in East Bethesda? I know this is just one of those things you have to deal with in an urban environment but these critters really freak me out. There was a report a few weeks back on one of the new channels that Chevy Chase was dealing with an infestation. They showed rats running around all over during the day, neighbors complaining. The rats are always around but areas pop up every few years with major rat problems.

This evening, July 1st. At Lynnbrook Park. Starts after sundown, but people start to congregate much earlier. It's like one big neighborhood picnic, and feels very Rockwellian.


Thanks for posting. What a glorious evening. Lovely setting. Lovely families. Hot dogs and popsicles. Flying baseballs and footballs and frisbees. Teeming with toddlers, and tweeners, and teenagers. Genuine good will and good cheer. Amazing fireworks display. A true slice of Americana.

We heard these too over by Greentree. Thought that NIH had opened up for fireworks.
