Sports is pretty common as a H.S. EC. For sporty achievers, so is being a captain. I'm sure it helps like any 4 year EC but I don't think it's a disproportionate advantage.

My impression was the UMich looked more for nice kids rather than polished leaders. My impression is that UVA values "leaderly" looking candidates. But it's a big school so you'll find all sorts of people.

I see that Michigan's legislature passed a law in 2006 forbidding universities from considering race in admissions.

Do you think they really stick to this? I.e. if it's very clear that an applicant is a minority (no race box but extracurriculars/awards say "I'm clearly a minority") will this kid get read differently?
Anyone have anecdotal proof one way or another?

There are webinars. Get a few boxes checked for remote interactions. Also college fairs.

We are local. My kid did a college tour, a college fair, an in-school AO visit, and a webinar. Maybe more than one webinar. So at least 4 name lists of which only one was a tour. Also sent SATs early although you don't have to do that at all.

As in if you want to attend, apply in August. Definitely do not wait until Nov 1 for EA

Really? I have never heard this before. So applying in September or early October really makes a difference?

NP. I think in a way it displays demonstrated and the application gets an early read (just my guess) before the flood of applications in November.

My kid is in-state Class of 2028. I agree with the above. Early signals preparedness and intent while the AOs are fresh.

Like every other school, the University of Michigan does evaluate “personal background”.

“ However, the Why Michigan essay was easy for my kid due to a good fit with his profile and what Michigan offered.”

A good essay shows demonstrated interest. An essay that reads as if Michigan were just another school to apply to, does not.

Michigan is loaded with coasters. So much for nice kids. See, I can make silly generalizations too.
