Door to beach and beach to door is more like 4 plus hours each way. 8 plus hours in the car is miserable and frankly unsafe after a day in the sun.

When you leave this area early in the morning and leave the beach after dinner, it doesn’t take that long. This isn’t hard.

PP here who asked the question, and I still can't figure out what "curated in a way to suggest it was a longer trip" means. I find it wild to think that I can look at a few pictures someone took (especially at the beach where they pretty much look the same) and think "definitely an X days trip".

+1 Unless the kids were wearing multiple different swimsuits in these pics, OP is the problem.

+1 I did day trips to Rehoboth multiple times per summer from NW DC with friends when I was younger. When your kids are good in the car and you enjoy driving it’s not a big deal to do a day trip.

Well are they coming from Maryland or Ohio? We plan to go to one of the Delaware beaches just for a day because it’s 3 hours and hotels are too expensive or too dingy.


6 plus hours in the car in a single day is crazy. At least book a one night hotel for a few hundred bucks, even if the kids have to share a bed.


Well $700 a night for a middle of the road Hilton near the beach is also crazy so I'll keep that money safe in my pocket, tyvm.

It's a simple day trip. Is that so hard to understand? I used to drive my DS to college (5 hours), help to unload his belongings, and drive 5 hours home. For me, I prefer to sleep in my own bed. Plus, it's summer and we have daylight until 9 PM.

I prefer day trips. It’s so much easier to pack and then have the kids sleep in their own bed, even if we get home very late. They feel almost magical, like you’ve stolen a vacation day from nothing.

It's no big deal, at least not from where we are in Bowie. We used to leave at 7:00, get to the beach by 9:30/10, and then we'd spend nearly 12 hours there (that included boardwalk time, pizza, ice cream, etc.). We'd get the kids all washed off & in their jammies, and we'd pull into our driveway around 1 AM.

Happiest of memories!! They're all grown up now, but I'd do anything to have another day like that.

We didn’t have a ton of money growing up and would do day trips from southern Maryland to ocean city. Hershey park is 2+ hours form Moco and we’ve done it in a day. Don’t think it’s that weird.

I've done this with my DD and her friends. We left before 7 am, were at the beach by 10. Around 4:00 they got showered/dressed at the changing area, we went to a nearby restaurant for dinner, and were on the road again by 6:00. It really wasn't bad at all and much better than the alternative of trying to deal with a bunch of teen girls in a hotel room overnight. Plus I wasn't having a 'beach day' like they were and wasn't too tired to drive back. I was just sitting under the umbrella reading a book or doing work email. No issues with being sleepy on the drive home.
