Goal: Naeher, Murphy

I realize this is 17, not the 18. I’m unsure of a few others. I don’t think Alex Morgan should go, unless for veteran/ locker room presence. She just hasn’t been performing at a USWNT level, and our forward and chemistry between Swanson/ smith/ Rodman clearly wins out.
I really want them to bring Yohannes. She’s a great player and the last 15 min she played against South Korea in the friendly showed me she is ready to play with the NT- I think welcoming and developing younger players is the right move here instead of players who are past their prime like Morgan.
I don’t want Korbin Albert to go. I don’t think her homophobic social media activity was appropriately handled, and I can’t imagine how her queer teammates feel comfortable playing alongside someone who liked social media videos rooting for the injury of a teammate (Rapinoe). Additionally, I wasn’t at all impressed last time she was on the field with USWNT- she didn’t make an impact at all. Did not prove she even deserves a spot, let alone the recent controversy. Christen Press also just spoke out about this situation and how poorly it was handled. Have you watched her play for her club team? Do you know what club she plays for? I've watched her play a few times for PSG, and the US coaching staff has definitely been following her development closely. Look up the awesome goal she scored for PSG in March. Europe is becoming the center of the women's professional soccer universe, even though arguably, from top to bottom, the NWSL is still a better league. Players from all over the world who play for European clubs have something that NWSL players don't have, the Champions League, which provides high-level international competition against teams from multiple European leagues. Emma Hayes seems to be looking for a different type of player, and she clearly values Albert's experience with a European team. She's a 20-year-old midfielder who is holding her own against strong competition.
It's fine and understandable for you to dislike Albert for her offensive social media activity, but do you know enough about her to say with such certainty that she doesn't deserve a spot based only on soccer? She can score, plays with both feet, and can cover a ton of ground. What other box-to-box midfielder should go in her place?

Morgan may not be what she once was, but she’s still performing 1000x better than Rapinoe was during the last WC. She’s also a full four years younger than Rapinoe, so this would be akin to Rapinoe being left off the 2019 WC! The difference, of course, is that Morgan had a baby.

I think this one could have gone either way, and Morgan’s inclusion would have been much more defensible.
Morgan is done. Good career but it is time to move on. She is a player who relies on her athleticism and only that. As a player she came to the game late and lacks the technical skill needed to play a different way. She has lost a step and that’s means she will struggle to score in competitive games.
Rapinoe’s inclusion in 2019 was a mistake. Slow was slow, out of position most of the time and a turn over machine. Did not matter because the US had the best athletics in every other match up. Basically the US played 10 players when Rapinoe was in the game in 2019 and still won. Can’t do that now. Though only Spain is a threat.
You can't compare WC rosters with 23 players versus the 18 (16 field players) on an Olympic roster. It is quite possible that if the Olympics had a 23-player roster, Morgan would be going. Sure, she is not as fast as she used to be, but she brings something valuable in terms of hold-up play and distributing the ball to her teammates. I don't agree that she can't adapt her game as she ages. She has done that, even if she wasn't effective during the WC.
With that said, it's hard to argue with this roster based only on soccer standards. It's a mix of younger and older players. Some of the older players can play multiple positions, so they bring both leadership and versatility. While the Olympics are important, the WC is the ultimate soccer event. If you look at the roster for the 2020 team that played in Tokyo in 2021, Vlatko went with mostly older players, which put the younger players with little international experience at a disadvantage when the WC rolled around.
