I don’t mind paying more in taxes if this will help kids in need. I think it should be more.

Has he stopped to think if he's giving this to lower income families that it might make them lose other benefits like rental assistance, food stamps, wic and medical. Make things like MC free if your push is for a college education. Provide more vocational/trade schools in MCPS (they are cutting one). Get the kids the right supports early on so they can be successful in MS and HS. Throwing money at them after they haven't been successful isn't helpful.

Once interest rate decrease, we are going to seriously consider putting our starter home up for sale and peace the hell out of MoCo. It is looking dicier by the day. They already jammed through higher property taxes. Now they have more free handouts like this. The county can’t grow the economy and jobs, so where is all of this going to come from? Who is going to oversee this? You give a baby born in 2025 $1800 and they want to use it in 2045 to go to school. It is now worth $5000. Who is setting up these accounts and then verifying the actual use. Is their a program to keep track of allotments and reimbursements. So many people live to throw out ideas without giving any thought to implementation and oversight.

Not sure about your 2nd statement and how that applies. I am all for free education for all and there is really no way anyone can take advantage of going to a community college for free.

A lot of oversight doesn’t necessarily make programs more effective though. I am fine with X amount of fraud and waste because of lack of oversight or a broad cash stimulus if it’s more effective on the whole than a program with a lot of red tape. MD has the largest level of UI fraud. It took my friend almost 2 years to get her UI benefits due to fraud. Constant calls, repeating the same info to multiple people. It was a huge headache. And the PPP loan abuse was huge. I personally know one person who got 3 million and never had to shut down. They used the money to buy their normal supplies. No staff reductions were needed. And they are the first to admit they aren’t the only ones.
