My son got into JMU this year with those stats. He plays a sport but wasn't planning to play there. He ended up at a different school where he will play his sport.

Hendrix has an official guaranteed flagship match, the others all came in similar ranges for DC. Similar gpa at end of sophomore year.

In case it matters, these schools are all known to be woke. It's interesting how LACs in the 60-100 range are the toughest place to find politically balanced choices. If you go up one tier you have several options like Sewanee, Rhodes, Furman, Centre, Gettysburg, etc. But those are all at least low reaches for this student.

I’m the PP, and I’d agree that Sewanee, Rhodes, etc tend to be more conservative/preppy than the ones I mentioned. But I’ll note that Wooster and Hendrix in particular both seemed decidedly less political than basically all the northeast schools we visited. I think sometimes we talk about “woke,” “conservative,” etc. as binaries when really it’s more of a sliding scale.

But all of the above options are potentially good suggestions, depending on the kid.

Would heavily recommend mid-size to smaller colleges if they're having academic difficulty. College of Charleston is a decent state school option similar to an LAC.

For the W/C NY person: I think a lot of the SUNYs other than Bing, Geneseo, UB and Stony Brook: Fredonia, Buff State, Brockport, Cortland, Oneonta, Oswego, etc

Yes on the Jesuits. Marquette and Loyola Chicago not only accepted my DC but offered her merit money!

+1 Both are fine schools with good supports.

Alabama is not happening with those stats.

Alabama admitted a friend's kid with a 2.9 from this area.

Check out the College admission advice for awesomely average kids board on Facebook. One of the rules is no GPAs over 3.5. The kids are getting into great places all over the country.

Soooo many!

Many NY and PA state schools would work. West Chester is probably the nicest of the PA state schools, but some others, heading north, are Millersville, East Stroudsburg, Kutztown, Bloomsburg. In NY, there is SUNY Cortland, Alfred University and Alfred State. Lots of nice privates like St. John Fisher, Nazareth, Canisius, St. Bonaventure, Le Moyne, and back in PA, Scranton.

If she's interested in a smaller school, St. Mary's College in Maryland

It's a public school named after the town where it's located
