My mom did this with Emma and Sense and Sensibility when I was 13/14 and the 5 hour Pride and Prejudice miniseries.

Is Bridge to Terabithia too “fantasy”? It just feels like there’s so much more packed into it, stuff a young teen girl could really get her teeth into.

I haven’t seen the movie, but I heard good things about it.

Thank you so much, everyone! I’m compiling a list but I’m leaning towards The Secret Life of Bees because I loved it when I read it and suggested it immediately to my own mom! I had forgotten all about this book!

I can’t get over deciding at 13 that you don’t like sci-fi or fantasy. She’s missing out on so many wonderful stories. No Ender’s Game, Lord of the Rings, the Shining, or Narnia? No Ray Bradbury or HP Lovecraft?

I feel like I’m like the anti-trans people. I just don’t believe that you can make a decision at 13 years old that you don’t like sci-fi or fantasy!

OP here. I hear you. I’m not going to fight her this summer, I just really want to do this to connect and supplement her reading in a way she will actually enjoy.
