My friend died the summer after our senior year of high school because she wasn't wearing a seatbelt and went through the windshield of the car. Her sister was wearing a seatbelt and survived. I would never tolerate my children (or husband for that matter) not wearing a seatbelt.

Maybe, but if you work the carpool line at a school you will see that many, many kids drive off bouncing around the backseat unbuckled. I also see it while stopped at lights — kids in the backseat who are clearly not in seatbelts.

My kid had a friend (born in america) who didn't put one on automatically, and I totally judged her for it. I reminded her to do it each time I picked her up and she complied. But I was amazed (and thought worse of her) that it wasn't automatic.
