I don't understand how that house could be rented out for anything more than 12K/month (and even that's pushing it). It's big, and it's in a nice area, but it's not super high end, upscale, refined, luxurious, or unique. It would be a 700K executive's house in a smaller midwestern city. It's unremarkable in the world of big houses. The rental asking prices reflect a huge disjoint in the mind of the owner and the market.

They would need to be registered as a short-term rental with MoCo. Per MoCo STR regs, this host & the renter already violated the law: "The maximum number of adults 18 years and older per short-term residential rental is six and the maximum number of adults per bedroom is two."
https://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/DPS/Process/zspe/Short-Term-Rentals.html

Selling alcohol without a permit is illegal, so that's already a few broken laws. Based on the social media video, I'm guessing there were probably also partiers under the age of 21; so that's a few more broken laws.

Weird property history for this house. Bought in September 2022 for $1.85M. Tried to rent it out for $80K/month in October 2023 (one year after purchase, likely so they wouldn't trigger mortgage fraud provisions) and it sat on rental market for 4 months. Put it back on rental market for $28K/month at end of April 2024 and recently pulled the listing.

Then it appears to be listed here for $100K/month as a furnished STR: "Price is correct: property is $100,000 a month and only available for 1-5 months at a time as an STR. Full service, fully furnished all included."

The person listed on VRBO as the "property manager" is also the owner per the Maryland SDAT property records website. It appears they applied for a homestead deduction but were denied by MoCo - "Denied 08/21/2023"

I also found the owner's LinkedIn - they are a real estate agent in the Palisades DC & Bethesda.

I actually am pretty sympathetic to the fact that violent crime needs to take priority, but the police response here should be viewed in that context as something that is completely typical.

MoCo cops absolutely do have the resources to handle this. They just hate and loathe the constituents who pay them. They are looking to do as little work as possible before running back to Western MD, WV, or rural PA with their paychecks.

OK, well I did pursue this pretty far at one point and even spoke to someone higher up, and this is what I was told. This party seems like an extreme example, but it fits well within the pattern of what I experienced and was told, so the police response doesn't surprise me.

Add a little sex trafficking into the mix, as well, probably.

You’ve really got your finger on the pulse.

And I’m sure you’re right. As soon as the ‘gram takes off after being founded 15 years ago, we’re really in for it.

What are you on about? The rise of influencer culture has led to ordinary people feeling the need to post aspirational lifestyle stuff any opportunity they get. And Instagram gave rise to influencer culture. Are the people desperate to post pictures of themselves at a "mansion party" posting on Instagram? Probably not. SM is constantly evolving. But is it thanks to Instagram and the culture it gave rise to that people feel the need to post this stuff? Absolutely. And without that drive to post, I don't think you have this kind of a pay-to-play party in the suburbs of the DMV.
