Book Thing Baltimore! Worth the trip! It is a warehouse of books and you can take whatever you want, completely free, no limits*.

Capitol Hill Books has a VERY wide collection of categories and subcategories, especially in nonfiction. I prefer it to Second Story and the used bookstore in Adams Morgan. CHB always has something that I want. Second Story never does, Adams Morgan is hit or miss for me. IMO, they are all a little pricey for used, but I want them to stay open so I think of it like member dues.

*Ok, their FAQ limits to 150,000 per day, lol https://bookthing.org/faq/

Preferably from second-hand thrift shops or libraries.

Second Story Books has locations in Rockville and Dupont Circle. I've been to the Rockville location. It was big and had lots of good stuff.

There is also Friends of the Library. I think in Arlington they are in every public library branch. In Montgomery County there is one at the Wheaton Library location and a location in Rockville, both large stores.

Hopefully Second Story in Rockville is better than the one in Dupont. I used to love it, but some of their regular employees are intolerably rude…it’s just uncomfortable at times. I much prefer the used cart out front of Lost City in Adams Morgan; I always find one or two good books.

Arlington has huge sales twice a year at Central library. They maintain small sales areas year round in each branch.
