She could be a doctor, nurse, teacher or someone who needs a backup to be able to take off. My parent was a doctor and schedules would come out 3 months in advance. They made her haggle with her coworkers and trade days if she wanted anything off. Leave had to be put in months in advance.

Are you sure you can't get the college trip on another day? Unless on the quarter system, most schools are out now and that's not the best time to visit because you don't get a good feel for the place.
Also, go ahead and schedule other vacation days.

I am completely unable to focus right now and looking on LinkedIn. I rely on this job for health insurance or I'd want to quit right now. It just feels so petty and stupid to "reject" someone's day off like this.
