My son recently got engaged to a lovely young lady. We are pretty close and I give the same gift to her that I give my daughters at Birthdays. This year the gift is a David Yurman sterling silver initial necklace with small diamonds. I love gifting and giving something they will always have is important to me. Future DIL is always very appreciative, as she comes from a family that does not do gifts. Last year they all got a Nespresso coffee machine.

Flowers are actually good because they are done in a few days. They are a good luxury treat that doesn't junk up your house. Most bouquets actually don't smell too much.

Candle and soap smell preferences vary across people and both products can be annoying to have to find a place for.

Cash can get stolen in the mail. Same for gift cards. Do a digital gift card instead.


I am not suggesting to send cash. I said I receive it from my low tech friend. Amazon GC via email was my suggestion.

I would much rather enjoy beautiful flowers than get more crap/stuff. I don’t care how nice the tea towels, mugs, chocolates, candles, lotion, perfume, or book is, I DON’T WANT MORE CRAP IN MY HOUSE.

Mugs and towels are so weird. If I want something like that I will just buy them. What if they have a linen closet bursting with too many towels already?

Chocolate is iffy because many middle aged women are watching their diet.

OP does she have charitable interest?

Not everyone enjoys chocolates. I’d likely give them away.

I’m a middle aged working mom and if my MIL sent me flowers or chocolates or anything for my birthday I’d be thrilled! And I have a great MIL. It truly is the thought that counts. I’ve received Georgetown Cupcakes before and they’re so much fun to eat and share. Can’t go wrong!
