Also keep in mind that Algebra taken in 7th grade is part of their high school transcript. My kids got very high scores on both the IAAT (99th and 98th percentile) and the SOL (600 and 582) without any prep (other than going to school and doing their math homework) and they still both found Algebra a bit difficult (though both got As).

Don't listen to these people.

Half of them just want to announce that their kid didn't prep for the test and they still got in.
They want to act like your kid won't be able to handle the material if they prepped to get in.
That's bullshit. Algebra in 7th grade and geometry in 8th grade simply isn't that challenging.
If your kid is good at math then go for it. Don't leave it to the wind to decide if your kid gets the education they need.
Getting your kid used to studying for important exams if a good habit.
Academic ability is not like height, studying actually makes you smarter in the same way that exercising makes you stronger and healthier.

The other half have kids that couldn't get in.
They want to pretend that this stuff isn't important enough to miss a soccer practice but it's just sour grapes.
There is a population of parents that want to believe that their academically mediocre kids are actually exceptional so they just don't want to steal their childhood by making them study.
It's bullshit. They know it and you should know it too.

This condemnation of prepping is just how some parents rationalize their own children's mediocre performance.

I agree with the poster above. My kid needed no prep other than what he was taught at school to make it into 7th grade algebra. Don’t stress. Review your child’s work, make sure that they understand the test is improtant when it comes around, and maybe ask them if they WANT to do algebra in 7th before pushing.

I can safely tell you that my advice to parents not to prep for the NNAT or the CoGAT or the IAAT or the SOL. I also suggest enrichment for kids who ask to do more math and not for every kid out there. Follow your kids abilities and interests.

There is no rush to get into Algebra 1 H. Most kids will take it in 7th or 8th grade which sets them up for Calc in 11th or 12th grade. TJ requires Algebra 1 H by 8th grade. There is no rush. We are on the second day of school and you are asking about passing a SOL in May.

OP, it's the opposite of bullying to warn you that prepping (for one year or many) can backfire in the long run.
