Is this for rising U11? I heard there were twice that many boys at Loudoun tryouts for that age group. Other tryouts we’ve been to have had 120 boys show up. A tryout with “only” 70 would be jice.

Tryouts for returning players is merely stagecraft above U10/U11. As others have noted, offers are determined weeks, if not months, in advance. Any adjustments are based mostly on whether players higher on the depth chart accept or decline.

This is true at the bigger clubs I'm sure but not necessarily at the smaller ones where people hop/drop/move a lot to try to move up etc. and they need to backfill often.

As pp said they go from the top, for the team, and then let second team go and then third, etc. and if they have feet draggers the whole thing takes even longer because it's an extra 48 hours of wait time for everyone farther down the list. If you don't hear anything within a week of the second tryout just assume you didn't make the cut, though. Only all-star kids normally get picked up at the u-11 and under ages in Loudoun as well, just be aware and not offended if your kid doesn't get an offer. Only a few actual spots are filled at tryouts these days.

I wouldn’t read too much into it. They need to form the top team first, then work their way down to the second team, etc. It’s better to get onto a team and work your way from there. These rosters get “sticky” (year over year) really fast so you’re at a disadvantage to say “let’s try again next year”. Tryouts at all these clubs are mostly to identify and place outside talent. They already know what they have with in-program players.

Mine is 10U. I'm willing to have her on a lower team just to get her in. I want to see how she does and with time if she can move up. I think she'll get more out of it than Rec and she likes playing. I heard it's easier to get them on a travel team when they're younger.

My son was with a lower level team at Loudoun. He didn't think he'd even make the team, and developed significantly with this coach. So clearly this coach wasn't just focusing on top players. The team got to the point they nearly beat a higher level team at Loudoun, finishing 1-2 in a random tournament.
Unforutnately based on tryouts it looks like most of this team will move to other clubs or to a higher team, and this team gets weaker players for next year, while promoted to a higher division.

yep.. reason why one of the age groups top players went to arlington. With 3 players also backing out of accepted offers. Going to be a s show next season. Think about it. They would rather be on a roster of 20+ kids vs being on a 18 roster. Tells you something.
