The GPA in naviance is the 8th semester GPA not the GPA they have when applying to college. I’ve asked the counselors about this. 8th semester GPA are usually higher because generally more courses taken are AP/Post AP.

VT and UMD: 4.1 to 4.2

UVA: 4.3 to 4.3

So my best guess is the distribution is as follows:

4.0 and below: 15%

4.0 to 4.2: 25%

4.2 to 4.4: 45%

4.4 and above: 15%

I wonder if this is still relevant, with the new grading system that has lowered high grades.

I see. So most of the top 25% still prefer to go out of state or prefer to stay in-state? I hope they select out of state option only for some T10/T20 school in their Major? UVA/Vtech should cover for most of the major with the in-state tuition.

It would be nice to know what percentage of top 25 percent decide to go out of state? Assuming here that many may get scholarships so finance (in-state tuition) is not an issue.

How does Naviance work? Is the 4.1 to 4.3 at VT just those kids of TJ that applied? If so, would then think GPA higher for the TJ kids who apply to the MIT etc schools.

Weighted GPA especially at TJ doesn't convey who's in the upper quartile, as much as the rigorous coursework that includes post-AP courses similar to:

Quantum & Electrodynamics
Organic Chemistry
Multivariable Calculus
Machine Language

and AP US History, AP Lit, etc.

yeah weighted.

re: why they dont disclose this: I suspect its to minimize the pressure on the kids.

If u know the average is 4.3 and u are at 4.1, its going to be really demoralizing.

It’s ironic that the best math and science high school in the country, where the kids are trained as statisticians and data scientists by age 14, cannot provide these basic statistics and they remain a mystery to all.
