Would the naysayers respond differently if this was about Kinesiology at Michigan?

Can you take kinesiology classes if not in the program? My DC doesn’t know exactly what they want to do after college, but they are pretty confident that it’s something in the field of sports med. I’m worried that the kinesiology program will limit their options. Since a DPT is an advanced degree anyway, I’m encouraging something in A&S instead. We took the campus tour a long time ago and I don’t remember much about the different schools.

Why? My kid is interested in physical therapy or possibly med school. Why is kinesiology bad?

No offense, but it is not taken as seriously as other science majors.

Would be good for a kid interested in being a trainer or phys ed teacher.

I would not encourage a strong student to enter this field.

If they are not strong, it might be a good choice.

It is not.

+1 nope it's not, I don't think I've seen a single athlete with a kinesiology major so while I don't know all of them, it's certainly not common. my DD does know some kinesiology majors and some of them do intend on med or PT school. They just take the required courses in the CAS.

This article says it is the most difficult acceptance at UVA. https://uvamagazine.org/articles/kinesiology_program_gets_moving#:~:text=Since%202011%2C%20when%20the%20Curry,the%20most%20competitive%20at%20UVA.

Thanks- I saw that but it’s from 2013 so I don’t know how applicable it is.

I think you can see stats by college. I’ll see if I can find the site.

Not good for either of those. They will end up a gym teacher or personal trainer.

Does it also help to get into med school?

No. A degree in Bio or Chem would be better.
