Ironically, everyone commenting that it’s regional also seem VERY familiar w it.

When Nelson Rockefeller created/designed/revamped the SUNY system, I feel he made a critical error by not investing in a few big state school teams, especially football and basketball. That is one big reason why SUNY does not have that national reputation.
They are strong schools, however.

Those rankings are not the be-all end-all that you’re making them out to be.

Indeed, they are not, but just because an anonymous poster on DCUM says a college is regional that doesn’t make it so.

UC limits OOS students by law, not demand. Hundreds of thousands of OOS kids apply but our boxed out.

I don't! I'm just a NYer stuck on DCUM (RIP YBM) and I've learned in the last few months that UMD is a good school. As a person who has lived and worked for giant tech companies in NY for 30 years, I didn't know that before. Sorry. Still think it's about sports!

If you think it's about sports, then you should know that UMD is B1G. It may not be the best one, maybe even the last one, but people into college sports know UMD.

Ironically, I was at google for 11 years. I'm not saying I had never heard of it, I just didn't know it was a good school. I worked at Apple for 6 years. I know Tim Cook went to Auburn. I know Auburn, but again .. it's not MI. I do think anyone can succeed from any college. I really believe that.

I think UMD has come along way from 30 years ago, from what I've heard. It's very difficult to get into UMD for CS. They now only admit about 700 students to CS (600 direct admit and 100 xfer).

I only heard of UMD years ago because of Google. I'm originally from CA, and really knew only CA schools and of course the big popular elite schools. I had never even heard that UVA was a good school (I'm in my 50s) until I moved to the DC area.

I think part of it is that a lot of people from CA and NY have so many great state schools that they don't even pay attention to a lot other state schools, though this is changing because CA schools are also getting so hard to get into.
