I love visiting my family in Sun Valley in the summer. My kids are similar ages to yours and often choose to have a day in the sun valley camp. Hiking, a day at Redfish lake, biking or horseback riding, etc. In August they have an open-air summer symphony that’s world class. People can sit in seats in the tent but it’s fun to stay out in the grass with a picnic.

The other place I’d recommend is Western Mass. Plenty of hiking, museums, concerts and farmers’ markets etc.

Great suggestion! I loved South Dakota. Make sure you bring carrots for the wild burros in Custer State Park.

If you aren't trying to take the kids on a hike all the way down to the river, it's fine. I have been in August and found the "but it's DRY heat" cliche to be true. Cool in the shade and at night.

I’d go to grand Tetons. Amazing. I’d also go to California - San Diego or Yosemite cause I’ve never been there. There are sooo many options as previous posters said, previous trips and time of the year matters a lot.

I was going to suggest this too, although I went in winter. You can also do Devils Tower, WY, as a day trip. Just don't go during the Sturgis rally in August. Too crowded.
