$38k for UVA vs $90k for most of them is tough nut.

UVA is closer to 55k for Engineering &/or extra Bus school fees, and also has unlisted costs of off campus housing that adds up fast. Ivies/T10 may be closer to 90k now but that price has more"all-in " costs listed. They are well worth it for people who do not need loans to do it. Its night and day: smaller classes , connected profs, huge endowments that fund TA and research jobs, boosts for top law /grad/med, and then just the peers themselves.

I never said it was. I said I should have quit my job like a like of households with moms that don't work to bring down the HHI a few years prior to college.

Make whatever choice makes you and your kid happy...but you have stop trying to justify it with reasoning like this. Know plenty of the "smartest" kids turning down honors colleges to attend Ivy schools, MIT, Stanford, etc.

Also, the whole "Honors colleges" thing is drastically overblown in its own right. I know kids at state schools turning down Honors colleges or not even bothering because the benefits aren't all the exciting (and often it comes with more work).

It depends on the school. My son was accepted into an Honors college at UMD that was quite nice, because they used a centrally located, renovated dorm, and some classes were held at the dorm so they could roll out of bed and attend in pyjamas. It creates a built-in community, which might be reassuring to some kids, since UMD has so many students.

He ended up going to GW because it had the better reputation for the major he wanted. He had the option to apply to an Honors college, but didn't bother, because none were interesting. He loves GW. His dorm is even nicer (single room with private bath), and he realized he wasn't actually socializing with people from his dorm, but rather the people at his club. Oh well.

For genuine middle class families, top 20 schools are usually far cheaper than the in state options.

I'm hubristically feeling optimistic for DC's two Ivy applications. I can't wait to have my self-delusion denuded once again!

In all seriousness, DC has already gotten into some great schools. If DC gets into an Ivy, DC will certainly consider that Ivy (although I'm doubtful DC would pick it). If DC doesn't, it's one less consideration as we move toward May 1.
