My grandfather’s name was Arden so it always reads as a male name to me.

Mae is an English feminine given name, a variant of May, both rooted in the Roman goddess Maia. In Gaelic and Celtic Mae also means goddess. The Greek goddess Maia was the goddess of nursing mothers.

I’m really not sure why some people feel the need to denigrate other people’s names, but there is nothing wrong with the name Mae and no, it is not primarily a nickname although it can be.

I know at least 2 first name Mae's now and it's my DD's middle name. I think it's pretty and not too common. I also like Arden but I don't think it's a name I would use myself.

What??? Incredibly stupid comment. It's hard to believe this is true. If it is, it's not some horrible cross to bear and falls firmly in the category of, you can make fun of any name.

Having said that, I prefer Mae and I think Mae Matson is fine!
