What?

This was 2021. We couldn’t believe it. But it didn’t matter, Columbia was the goal. That’s why kids shouldn’t worry themselves over these random decisions. It’s truly a crapshoot. They will land somewhere that’s just for them.

I don't think it is a crap shoot insofar as it is not something random or closely resembling a lottery. It looks as though the lesser schools thought the student would not come and were protecting their yields.

Of course it happens — but some commenters here (wrongly) think that all colleges that consider yield are automatically second-rate. Realistically, all schools have to calibrate their admissions decisions to make sure they get a first-year cohort that's not too big, and not too small. They have dorm space and classroom size to consider — and the AOs' bosses also want to see a decent yield. Of course there are miscalculations, and some kids get rejected despite great stats and a genuine desire to attend, even as some lower-stats kids get in. I wouldn't use that as a way to disparage the school, though – that's not an easy job at all.
