My front door is at the bottom of a flight of stairs. (I live in a townhouse). I always call out to my dog when I come in, but usually find her sunning herself by the window. I'm always like "Girl what? Aren't you excited to see me?" Sometimes if I'm slow to take off my coat and shoes and come up, she'll trot over to the top of the stairs to see what's taking me so long. She's a bit of a snob. I know she loves me though.

Same! It can be annoying sometimes, but if my dog didn't do it, I'd be so sad and worried that something was wrong.

I think this is one of their roles in the household! If you don’t like it, you should get a cat. I have never met a dog who didn’t greet people at the door.

My dog did it for 16 years. He then went deaf and would sit by the door. He died last month. It is so hard.

Mine did! After a while (idk at least five years) he would just thump his tail if he was comfy on the couch. He was supremely lazy though, and I was in and out of the house a lot during the day. Lab/hound mix. I got a full greeting if I had any kind of food or if it was near dinner time.

OP, I am giving you the benefit of the doubt and I am hoping that you hope your dog's greeting will never end. If not, you are a monster.

Sounds like you haven't spend much time with any cats.

My cat runs to the door every time I come home - she knows the sound of my car and footsteps from 25 yards away, outside. She rolls around on her back and gives me looks of love every time I come home.

I cat-sit a lot of kitties, and all the friendly ones (which are like 50%) will do this, too. It's a false assumption that cats aren't affectionate, friendly, and filled with love when they see familiar people.

My cat does this! As soon as I open the door from the garage she starts telling me all about her day. Then she waits impatiently to unload my stuff and sit down so she can jump on my lap.

A first time dog owner is asking if their dog will always do this. Why are you assuming they want it to stop? Maybe they hope it never does.

This. No matter what I do or don't do, my dog loves me. I love how excited she gets when she sees me. You can train yours not to jump.

No, they never stop greeting you at the door. It's wonderful. We greet them with that much enthusiasm, too. We are so lucky to get to live with these wonderful creatures.
