My dad signed a three-bedroom apartment in an elite neighborhood in my home country to me.

inherited some mineral rights from my husband, who inherited them from his father. Once in awhile I would get $40 or so from one of these properties (none of the rights involved large percentages of the pooled rights). Then one day I got paperwork in the mail to sign and had to return paperwork to prove I was who I said I was, followed by a check for $13k. I didn't have much money at the time and desperately needed a new roof, so that went to pay for re-roofing. It was a few years' accumulated royalties from a new well on the property.
It later turned out someone else owned the original deed--this was a case where the rights were sold in the 50s (for $1) and it was standard to use initials and last name. My FIL was in the oil business his entire life, although he moved to a different region where his activities also moved (due to new oilfields discovered a few years later). There was no actual well until the 80s, the outfit drilling tracked him down, he signed paperwork attesting to himself as the proper owner, and received a photocopy of the deed. The person with the original died in the last few years and his daughter found the deed and gets the royalties now. I did not have to pay back the money I received.

This is beautiful. Thank you, pp, for sharing this.

I’ve gotten about $2K of stuff from my Buy Nothing group. Nice desks, really nice dressers, lululemon, nespresso, high end designer clothes. Lots of nice stuff. I also give away nice stuff that I not longer use.
