No such thing as just a dog. They are your family and they were loved deeply. Let yourself grieve. Yes, no one else truly understands it other than other dog people. Cry. It's ok. They do not live long, and it is the worst.

It's so hard. Do you have a friend who is also a "dog person"? When one of my friend's lost her "heart dog", even months later she was talking to me about it, and then I was talking about how hard it was to put my dog down (5 years ago, I have 2 more now) and we both ended up ugly crying but it was rather cathartic too...sometimes it really helps when others feel the same.


It does get better with time, but they always have a special place in your heart.

Please know I’ll keep you in my prayers. It’s been two months for me and my boy and I’m still struggling without his wagging tail and sweet smile. I get what you’re saying. We all have that one soul dog and it feels crushingly absent without them. Sending you a big hug.

It’s hard. I was a mess when I lost my second cat. Absolutely wrecked. It’s normal to be sad, but with time, you can be grateful your doggo isn’t suffering.

Yep, same here. We lost our older dog on April 30 and I still cry every day. My vet said she believes you will have one “soul dog” in your life. You can love all the others but there’s one dog who gets you and you get him/her. I love my 3 year old dog but the one who passed away was my bestie.

My thoughts are with you and I am truly sorry for your loss.

I’m so sorry. Grieving is a process and takes time.

Wanted to share a few things that helped me:
- consider fostering rescue animals or volunteering. It may be too soon to commit to another dog but channeling your love and energy into animals that need you could help you feel useful and distracted.
- try signing up as a dog walker or watcher on rover.com. I got to spend time with dogs, learn new dog breeds and figure out what I wanted for my next dog after a year or two of waiting.
- this is really out there but I also went to a pet psychic who can communicate with your dog. I did it for fun to talk to to my current dog, but they can communicate across to dogs who have passed. Of course it’s unclear if it’s accurate so I’d suggest you take this one with a grain of salt. I used Carrie Kenady @petpsychic who I heard on a podcast (that is her Instagram handle)

Our dogs trust us to take care of them and I don’t think they’d ever question your decision for your health care of them or when to end their life. They appreciate our concern and decision making. I also believe we will get to see them again after we die.

Just saw this thread. OP I am so sorry for your loss. Condolences too, to the others who lost their pets.

All the comfort I can offer is that in time, the sweetness memories outweigh the pain. It can take a while.

We lost our heart cats after having them nearly 22 years. They were brother and sister and inseparable.

We never got other pets. I do sometimes regret that.
But I feel them with us in their house and we speak of them daily. Sometimes I say "Mommy's home" and although I know that's just wishful I imagine they know.

It has been almost 4 months and I miss him so much. Especially when I look at photos of him when he was a puppy. I wish I could go back to that time just for an hour.
