In laws live 15 mins from us. We see them 2x per week on average.

It is a timeshare "deal". They've had a timeshare for 25 years and go to the most random places. Not totally sure how it works, but it usually seems like they can't pick their dates either.

MiL is 64 and in good health so I don't suspect mental decline, but I guess it's not out of the realm of possibility.

If she wants to spend time with your family, she should come to you and stay in a hotel near you. It's not much of a "vacation" to take two toddlers on a trip like you're describing.

She probably already paid for it and needs to use her flight credits

Why do they want you to go there so badly?

I agree there is something up with this location, your DH should ask.

When my mom got weird about vacations, it was because she'd received a serious medical diagnosis and would only tell her adult kids when ALL were present in person, which wasn't coming together. And she wanted to take a farewell trip to a favorite spot, but hadn't told anybody why; we, not knowing the reason, didn't want to go ... it was a mess.

Let go of the idea that you will convince her to see your point of view. She won’t. That is why you have to say less and less. No explanations. No excuses. Just, “No, this isn’t going to happen. Please stop asking.” Then walk away.

I don't want to freak OP out, but I do like the idea of coming up with the craziest reasons that MIL is fixated on this trip.

Is it a cabin in a national park where you have to reserve a year out? So they got the cabin reservation when they came online and just assumed you all would want to go?
