Honors colleges looks for leaders, not followers.

Maryland has 60k high school graduates and 1k honors college seats.

He applied to a program that has more applicants than seats.

Not sure why you expect admissions to a different state's public schools. VA has public schools.

4.4w, 34 ACT, 8 APs, nationally ranked athlete w orchestra leadership and governor school, direct admit to Smith, not admitted to honors. Did get into College Park Scholars and no merit currently.

Because even OOS, UMD honors is $25K less than Cornell. Cornell is a dismal place, not very welcoming. Winters are long and dreary. It's really difficult to get to/from unless driving.
My kid did not like Cornell or the programs there. Weather they could have lived with (they are 2 hours away in very similar weather, but are only 5 mins from the airport and in a bigger city)

Right. This, too. Ithaca is depressing and so is Cornell. My kid didn’t like Cornell.

Exactly. I know of kids who were accepted to HYSP and chose UMD honors due to cost.

I doubt your child did anything wrong. There’s only so many spaces, and it’s a lottery to get honors.

Did he get accepted to T30 schools?

Those students I know in honors were accepted to HYSP and/or T30 schools too.

I suspect UMD looks for a variety of majors and awards and interests in addition to the usual stats. If they need an X major and an applicant has a slightly lower GPA, maybe that person gets an offer.

I also suspect they want a mix of OOS and in state.

My DD was accepted to honors at UMD this cycle. She also was accepted to some other honors programs and UMD’s program is less appealing.

UMD honors direct admit to CS with merit.

Had 58 credits going in. Will graduate in 3 years with two degrees, all for < $100k. Not bad.

That's great. BTW, as a CS major he can go for a one year Masters degree too. So, in 4 years he will have a double majors in undergrad and a Masters degree. You should check that out.

pp here.. that is the plan. So 4 years, < $130K = 2 bachelors and 1 masters in CS, zero debt, cash gift, and a car.

I was just focusing on the undergrad part.

Of course, it was a blow to their ego to not get admitted to a T15, but I think they're happy with their plan. They did get on a WL for one of the T15, but decided not to pursue it because they wanted this plan.

Also to the OP. Honors was nice to have for the dorms freshman year but in long term not that meaningful. UMD will be what he makes of it.

+1 pp here.. totally agree about UMD honors. DC picked the honors that had the better dorms. That was about it. DC is dropping honors next year.

I would not be surprised if they didn't know each other. LOL. There are some really smart kids there.

You got Cornell money?

Cornel; is 10th and UMD is 11th on csrankings.org so not worth the additional $200K+ in costs IMO

Ivy's laugh at those stats. In addition, you need major ECs like national awards, president of your class or captain of a sport etc and even then chances are slim.
