I agree, OP. We ordered Papa John’s last week and it was almost $50 for 2 pizzas and an order of cheese sticks with delivery and tips.

Not OP, and I know you don't care ... but I love Ledo's. Pizza, yeah, but especially that house salad dressing.

Nothing tops a good Neopolitan pizza, but Ledo’s, while different, is awesome. We just rediscovered it. Kids used to hate Ledo’s and now they love it.

Get a pizza pan - they have holes in the bottom - oil it, and cook on high heat, like 450. Also don't make the crust too thick or use too much sauce as it will be heavy/wet.

Sorry OP, but I can't duplicate the charred old world pepperoni and charred crust our local pizza parlor does. It's fantastic

But, I mix it up a lot and try anything that looks decent. Moms has a sourdough kind I like (Alex’s maybe) but nobody else in my family likes that one, the sourdough taste is very distinct.

I'm from Michigan and had never heard of this "Detroit style pizza" stuff until the last year or so. Whatever.

At any rate, the last few times I've ordered Domino's or Papa John's it's been worse than a frozen pizza. So now I just keep one of the better frozen ones in the freezer.

Yes, obviously food you make at home from cheap ingredients costs less than food you pay to have someone else make, deliver to your door, and clean up. This is not news!

I mean, I'm like OP in that my family regularly makes pizza (2-3x a month) and if I'm WFH I can do it on a weeknight. We are cost conscious and don't order out much, I feel like homemade pizza is sadly one of the most well balanced meals my toddler will eat, and frozen isn't as good.

That said, ordering out isn't for those nights. It's for the nights when everyone is sick and you just need a damn break.

For those of you who make it at home, how do you get the crust crispy?

I remember back in college when a large pizza was something like $8 and we’d all throw in literally a dollar and get pizza to share

I like making pizza. But please don't try to tell me that 10 minutes + 10 minutes + 30 minutes + clean up + having the ingredients in the first place is remotely appealing to a family with kids where both parents are working and everyone needs to eat.

We are blessed to be able to throw $30-$45 at pizza delivery every once in a while, so we do. Last week it was a night that we both worked until 6 (at home) and were tired and had been cooking all week, and this week it was last night, when we were also working a lot and the kid was sick and I (the main cook) had a huge day the next day.

I almost always have lots of salad stuff on hand. So if I am exhausted and DH is still working and our kid is hungry, I'd much rather order a pizza, make a salad, and have it show up in 20 minutes than start an hour long project. And I like to cook a lot!

If health is a concern, honestly it's not. We are all very healthy and active with perfect BMIs and 2 pieces of pizza for the adults (sometimes 1 for me) + a huge salad and however much pizza the teen wants + a huge salad is not going to hurt anyone. We do not get meat or extra cheese, and often get thin crust (which I can not replicate at home).

Only time I order pizza is if we’re having friends over. I don’t like cooking particularly and sometimes I just wanna order pizza a d enjoy the company without the anxiety of feeding everyone.

OP here and I get not everyone has the time to cook. I don't always either, but since we always get at least two meals out of pizza, it makes it extra economical for us.

We used to do frozen pizza more but that's gotten really pricy too! I have also found that you need to spend a lot on frozen pizza to get good quality ingredients, and the crust is just never very good. Obviously making it ourselves is more work, but it's MUCH better and we can control the ingredients, plus none of the preservatives and other things you get in a lot of frozen meals.
