For first excursions in undies, I always started with low stakes, outdoor things — going to the park, playground, walking around the neighborhood — or very quick trips to the store to only buy one or two things. And made a big deal of it if it went well (and they sure learned quickly not to pee their pants at the playground because that meant we had to go home immediately). Then I’d work up to longer/more important/more indoor errands.

OP here - we're waiting for a delivery on a potty timer. If I wasn't watching her and taking her when she looks ready we'd only have success about 2 times in 10, I'm hoping the timer can help make it more consistent in evenings.

To PPs and others did you use a potty watch when on chores and out as well?

PP who used (uses, potty training second kid now) an alarm on my phone. At first, diapers/no efforts to use the bathroom while we’re out. Once I’ve had some success with the timer (ie know how long they can hold it/what times they usually need to go), I time errands around potty breaks so they’re always home at a potty time. Public bathrooms only after they’re comfortable in undies at home and daycare.

PP who recommended a timer/phone alarm. Yeah, my life is too hectic to watch my potty training kid constantly. I also recommend undies and an alarm if she’s having trouble remembering to head to the bathroom regularly.

One of my BFs kids was almost 6 and had an accident at summer daycare, still put a diaper on when they helped them change.

The daycare knows when parents lie
Do the weekend potty training and don't like to the provider. They will know

Pull ups are an in-between step that often just slows the process down. Going from diapers to underwear is less confusing and many centers used to say no pull-ups —but too many parents these days ask for centers to linger way too long in a pull up phase.

Can you put her in underwear after school in the evenings? That's what we did.

OP here - we'll stick at it for the weekends and diapers at daycare. We spoke today and they want her to be asking repeatedly before they will move into pull ups. Hopefully we can manage to make it work on the weekends

I don’t know about the daycare person who posted but my daycare was totally fine with the odd accident 2-4. I think they’d have been fed up if it was daily, but not every once in a while. I think asking a kid to be “accident” free while they’re in diapers/pull-ups is pretty ridiculous to be honest — they know they can pee in pull-ups without repercussions. My kid went from peeing in pull-ups one week to wearing undies without any accidents the next week from a daycare point of view (there were many many weekend days in home in undies with accidents of course).

Accidents happen and are expected. I won’t go into detail with our policies. (we do pull-ups over underwear.) Multiple daily accidents are not.
We know these children sometimes better than the parents do and know when they are ready to be potty trained. One year a family left for spring break and came back with a potty trained child. I knew that child and her parents and I trusted her parents 100% when they said the child hadn’t had any accidents in three days. I let that child stay in her underwear with pull-ups over for one week she had zero accidents and then she was fully in underwear.
