I did so many stupid, dangerous, cringe-inducing things in college. The worse I can’t even bring myself to type out. I drank to the point of blacking out too many times, and I guess maybe I thought I was having fun at the time, but in retrospect I was a mess. Depressed, not fitting in, and with a lot of unresolved issues from home. I don’t think there’s need to share specific incidents with my kids, but I think I can speak to them generally about using substances to mask issues, versus just to loosen up and have a little fun.

Lots of drunken hookups and sex. No, I haven’t told my daughters any of it but I do tell them that pretty much every action I have regretted, I did while drunk, hoping that will serve as a cautionary tale.

Not much of a drinker, but still shocked at myself for being in bed with men I barely knew. A lot of bad things could have happened. My kids don't know per se, but told them:

DS - "I understand what college kids do, but remember, she's someone daughter/sister/cousin. Treat her with the respect that you would want someone to treat a girl in our family".

DD - "If you ever feel uncomfortable in a situation, leave immediately".

Suffered from severe depression.

Tried to kill myself twice. Pretty serious attempts.

My child is in middle school now. I probably will not tell them about the suicide attempts, but will let them know about depression and family history.

Got in a car with a friend who was drunk. She drove through a construction barricade onto the area where they were repaving and doing other constructions until she hit a giant pile of dirt.

Told kids: never get into a car where your friends/the driver has been drinking! Call an Uber. (There wasn’t Ubers back when I was in college.)

I let a professor put his hand on my knee and basically come on to me. I didn’t take him up on his offer but I didn’t report him, either. I just laughed about it with my friends. I’m embarrassed and angry at myself for not saying something so he would be prevented from doing that to others who might have felt more pressure to give in.

I did tell my college-aged daughter, because I would want her to tell.

Sadly, I did most of the things mentioned in this thread so far, and a lot of them were in high school. Now I'm a boring middle-aged mom who frowns at teens in short shorts, and I'd never let my kid find out anything different. I don't want them to think it's OK.

We smuggled a keg into our dorm freshman year. My friend threw it out the window when we were done (3rd floor?) onto a parking lot. I think it hit a car? TG it didn't kill someone.

Def lots of drunk nights and hook ups.

In college, no drunk driving as we always walked to the parties/bars. In high school, yes, though (mostly with friends, but one night I drove when I should not have for sure).

Basically mind blowing drunk for 4 years. Went out every night of the week except Sundays.

Biology major. Had a 3.8gpa

I think the fact that I saw Kathy Acker as kind of a role model says everything about my college experience. That and going to Reed. Will I tell my kid? Hell, no.

They seem a lot less self-medicating and self-hating than I was, so I have high hopes their stupidity will be limited to the minor stuff... and yes, totally giving them an Uber account.

I literally cringe thinking about all the stuff I did and I don’t particularly want to know what my kid is doing either, just that they are staying safe. We don’t learn to be better adults by someone telling us things. We learn by making mistakes.

The worst is drinking and driving. I made some horrible decisions around that when I was in college. I shudder when I think about it in hindsight and am really ashamed of myself. Have not told kid, but gave him no questions asked access to our Uber account.
