More and more folks I know in UMC are guiding their bright kids to state flagships or private that give merit. I really believe the market is going to drive folks in those directions. There will always be full pay, don't care as long as it's the highest status school possible kinds of folks. But research shows for most majors, outcomes are pretty similar for flagships as for pricey elite schools. I think people are going to start to believe it.

I had slightly better grades than you and my kid has better grades than me but the work they do now is much lower. I think the colleges are taking the same sort of kids that they did before. It's just that anything remotely educational is now called honors and AP is what honors used to look like.

Second the notion that you should start getting comfortable with large OOS flagships that give tons of merit and have invested greatly in facilities, research, professors. Basically for a decent student, you can go for 30% or less of a private school and get a wonderful experience and have a great time.

After the top 30-50 schools, does it really matter?

That said, these schools are getting incredibly competitive too (many are already of course),

This isn't going away. But just as it is now, there are plenty of colleges for every student. Most colleges accept most students. For those who are not ruled by rankings at the top end of USNWR, admissions will get easier. The latest trend in admissions is "direct admission." This is where colleges can see your student's profile (in the Common App or other platforms) and then reach out directly with an offer of admission. And more schools are offering straightforward admissions based on stats, e.g. GMU and VCU just started testing guaranteed admission if your GPA is a certain level.

So once OP's student is applying, they will likely have no trouble identifying a few safeties with automatic acceptance which will cut the current stress of worrying that you'll be yield protected by an expected safety or surprised that the admissions office had a new whim this cycle and your safety turns out to be not so safe.

I think the college landscape will change quite a bit in the years to come. Demographics will drive a few things. I suspect quite a few smaller liberal arts colleges will close their doors. And there will be some consolidation in state school systems.

The cost of private college has already reached the point of absurdity. A 6th grader today is looking at more than $500,000. Two kids will be a million plus to go to school. That is not happening for MC and UMC families. Forget Colby or Brown. The real competition will be for spots at the state flagship schools. That is where talent will flee. It's already happening today.

The perception of Ivy League schools will broadly continue to decline. They are too invested in rich and DEI students. Meanwhile, the academic quality of public school students will continue to rise. A Harvard degree in 2034 will not be regarded the same as a Harvard degree was in say 2004. Some schools, however, like MIT and a few of the other elite non-Ivies will of course remain extremely competitive and desirable. They have the endowments to make admissions possible for everyone qualified. And they are more invested in talent rather than legacy, wealth, and connections, which is what often taints the Ivy schools.

Fewer students will choose 4 year colleges all together. I suspect there will be more interest in apprenticeships and trade schools. And just certification programs, articulately for things like coding.
