This past year, if you did not have a roommate, when it was your time to pick in the lottery, you would just pick an empty bed. So it was completely random. I haven't heard if they are going to do the same process this year.
Five years ago, when my oldest was a freshman, he filled out a survey and the school picked a roommate for him - in his case, it did work out. They both were very compatible with living styles.
This past year, if students do not want to just pick an open bed, and they didn't already have a roommate, they had a couple of options. There was an instagram page where the kids could message each other. The school still did the survey and when your results came back, it does match you with other students are "compatible" and you could reach out to them. My younger DS reached out to a couple of guys via instagram. The guy he ended up living with did match with him very well on the survey and they're getting along great.
My DS does know a couple of guys who did the "pick the empty bed" option but doesn't know any girls that did that - although I'm sure there are females at W&M that went completely random.
There is also the option freshman year of a "single" room with no roomate. I would not recommend this option to anyone who has trouble socializing. But for my extraverted kid, it worked well. She left her dorm room every morning and didn't come back until evening. She met a bunch of people freshman year, then choose a friend to room with sophomore year. She said it was way better having a roomate, but doesn't regret the single for the first year before she got to know people. Just another option out there that hasn't been mentioned.

3.9 Weighted is a low GPA. WM 25% is about 4.2W. It’s great OP’s kid shows upward trend, but it’s a bit late in the game.
That said OP, I had a kid who was admitted EF with 4.0W a couple of years ago. But 34 ACTs, with perfect verbal scores. Took 4APs in 11th and 7 in 10th (magic of one semester classes, like macro and micro). 1 B+ each of junior and senior year. 3.8 to 4.0 10th to 11th, 4.0 to just below 4.2 at graduation. She was admitted to WM ED1, completely unhooked. It can be done.
ED may be over, but if your kid is deferred, WM remains interested. If there is a denial, your kid might be waitlisted and get a shot at spring entrance (fall must be overseas or at a community college). Or they could go to a 2 years at cc, guarantee transfer with a certain GPA. How would you feel about on of these choices OP?
The spring admit option seems to be getting more popular each year. It’s a risky gambit, your kid can say in the LOCI that your kid wants to remain in consideration for fall admission. BUT, if that is not an option, DC is willing to do the waitlist, and will go overseas next fall, then start on campus after Christmas. That might give a “soft no” deferral give a kid ann edge in making the waitlist, because I image most WL kids turn down the spring admit.
Regardless, send have your kid them a LOCI! A sincere one, with a lot of enthusiasm for the sense of community, not a boilerplate. WM cares about that a lot.
I absolutely detest this for our children. They are growing up in an age where you can’t make mistakes or adapt to a new school after age 14. No wonder there’s an anxiety epidemic.

No.
The past two years, room selection has been by lottery. You can deposit as late as May 1st and have the same chance of getting a good (or bad) lottery spot as someone who ED'd. I don't know if they will do a lottery for first years again - they changed the process from when my oldest was a student.
Only exception is that Monroe scholars will get placed in Monroe, but I'm not sure application round affects your chances of getting that.
When are Monroe scholars notified? If they ED1 or ED2, is it always when/if they receive their acceptance, or can they be notified of selection later?

Yep agreed it is low… eyes wide open but she loved W&M and so do I. The deferral actually a good outcome as she is still in play. We know about the spring pathway and would def strongly consider in waitlisted. She will certainly be following up with a LOCI. 🤞
