Insist on a daily shower and a hair wash every-other-day.

I have normal-to-greasy hair and I think the more I wash it, the greasier it gets. If I suck it up and only wash it every other day for a week or two, the amount of grease gradually decreases. I really think you can train your hair in this regard, within reason (ie. from needing a wash every 24 hours to maybe every 48-72 hours). Now, athletics are a bit different. If her head is sweating she needs a daily hair washing.

I have fine, oily hair that needs to be washed daily to not look greasy. If people don't have the same kind of hair, then they will think it's fine to go a day without washing and don't understand that it really does look greasy after just 24 hours. If she won't wash it every day, invest in Batiste dry shampoo - she can just spray it on her hair the days she doesn't want to wash it. It works quite well.

Some people simply have hair that has to be washed daily. I'm one, my dad is one - there are definitely others like us out there.

My guess is that parents are not super clean either. Apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

Lack of hygiene is a bigger issue as they get older and do sports. My HS child has a teammate on a sweaty sport who doesn’t bathe. Everyone has noticed and talks about it. She stinks. They have bus travel to meets and overnights and it’s an issue. The child in question brags about it and says her parents want her to bathe and she just doesn’t feel like it. No one wants to sit or interact with her. It’s wild.

As a middle school teacher, yes, please make her shower at least every other day.

I've been a teacher for a long time, and the hygiene of tweens/teens over the last 6 years has gone seriously downhill. Especially in female students. They were always the ones who were more put together than their male counterparts. I've had to refer more female students to the guidance counselor due to being smelly than ever before. Only one time I remember it being an issue with water accessibility at home and the counselor helped the family connect with proper resources. All the other times are because they just "don't want to" and parents don't make them.

Yes, and find shampoo that works. Loreal clay based shampoo for one kid and Head and Shoulders clinical for oily hair works for the other.

OP here. This is in part what I am wondering is reasonable. She has relatively fine, medium thickness, but totally straight hair and it DOES look gross after a day... but...

This describes my hair type and if I don't wash it everyday, it is noticeably greasy after about 24 hrs.
DS is the same (hair is much thicker) but within 24 hrs his hair is clumpy and greasy.

Put the face wash in the shower and tell him to wash there at least. It's not perfect but at least it's an increase from your current frequency. Also, maybe put these by his bedside. He can use one and toss it before bed.
