It is in the interest of students and teachers to have MCPS leadership with a zero tolerance for sexual harassment and abuse.
MCCPTA should have at least made that clear as the number one priority of its organization while waiting to learn more facts about the dynamic between the BOE and McKnight.
I am not normally thrilled with MCEA but their statement was much more on point.
Maybe because the super didn't engage in this behavior themselves and it had gone on under the previous administration so she just inherited this problem.
“They all participated in that culture,” said a former MCPS administrator who claimed to have attended happy hours on several occasions with McKnight, Beidleman and the two chiefs when they were middle school administrators during the 2012-2013 academic year. “I often felt uncomfortable by the excessive drinking, inappropriate sexual jokes and other innuendos of the other administrators in my cluster, including Dr. McKnight. While Dr. Beidleman clearly did some inappropriate things, there’s a bigger issue with the culture of MCPS leadership, and Dr. Beidleman is a product of the environment that groomed him. It was an unprofessional culture, one of hazing, bullying and other inappropriate actions. This is how we were trained.”

And, look at the DCUM forums, half the people love her and think MCPS is doing great, and the other half thinks the sky is falling down. How is MCCPTA supposed to take a side, when their membership is split?
If that’s your argument for why they went public with such a shameful quote, a “no comment until we consult with our membership” would have been fine. Or a holding statement that’s generic about being concerned and working to get to the bottom of what’s going on would have been ok too. But to release a statement that makes it seem like you care more about protecting leadership who protect serial sexual harassers than the underlying problem itself is insane.
