Of course! Unless they have a mental illness or something. When I was 13 I was babysitting for families with 3-4 children, including babies.

“A mental illness or something”— do you mean a disability?

I hate you. I mean HATE you.

NP. Dramatic, much?

ADHD IS a mental illness/psychiatric disorder. Google is your friend.

I'm talking about APS but I live in Alexandria- so referenced the roads there. I just got in from a run and the side roads in Del Ray are NOT fine.

Are you a teacher or do you work for APS?

No, just a random Alexandria resident wondering of the status of Arlington Public Schools.

Yes, I am a teacher in Arlington.

2 hr delay - 99% chance
Closed - 66% chance

Predicted to be 10* at 10am?
Revising to 80% chance closed

+1. Fairfax’ll close, then APS will close. I can only think of 1 time in the past 6 years when APS didn’t follow FCPS.

Yeah sorry about that. It is because of teachers like me and lack of subs. I can’t afford Arlington so I take off when my FCPS kids have snow days. They can’t legally stay home alone.

There is no legal home alone age in Virginia.

If they are kindergarten, sure dicey. But age 8 is 100% home alone.

Sorry recommendation is age 8 alone for an hour.
Thing is if someone calls CPS for this, I lose my job too.

No one is leaving their 8 year old alone.

10 for 1.5 hours according to the Fairfax guidelines.

https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/news/home-alone-guidelines-kids-and-parents

So not the 5 hours I would need if FCPS closed and Aps was 2 hr delay. Luckily that isn’t the case right now!

From your own link, it says there are NO laws regarding this in Virginia and its ultimately up to the parents. Have a backup plan because a closure tomorrow is likely in FCPS.

Anonymous wrote:What’s the logic behind a 2 hour delay tomorrow? It’s not snowing tonight and it will still be in the low 20s at noon. Is the idea that plows or salt trucks will have time for one more pass? Usually a delay happens when we’re expecting the weather to improve or at least get warmer by mid-morning as compared with early morning. Nothing will change between 6 and 9 am tomorrow, right?

Its just cover so that when they close early in the morning, it will look like they REALLY tried to open. Mark my words. Closed tomorrow.

Ok? Let me go cry in the corner. You are strangely defensive. Of course most 13 and 10 year olds can stay home alone. This CANNOT be news to you.

Sidewalks are sheets of ice

Ours are clear but we live in a condo so they have crews. I’m thinking they’ll call a 2 hour delay to be safe

Only you know what your kids are capable of. This is not a question you need to crowdsource.
