OP, I'm so sorry for your loss. And I'm so glad (for you AND your mom) that it wasn't a prolonged ordeal, that your last interaction was a kiss goodnight (how utterly lovely that is, truly) and that you didn't have to get into any battles about decision-making or care. I hope that you feel at peace with it. It certainly sounds to me like you did a wonderful, loving job of being there for and with your mom until the end.

Also, yes - totally normal for people to pick a quiet moment when they're alone to die - even when they've essentially had 24/7 care/companionship - they still find a way. My mother did the same thing.

OP, if you have the strength in a few months, I would encourage you to repost about your experience/thoughts/feelings about prolonging life, whether to be resentful or not re: loved one's health decisions in the past. It's an interesting discussion but for now, we are so very sorry for your loss.

Thanks for all of the support. She died almost with me at her side - had asked to get helped back into bed. I went into her room to give a kiss goodnight and dashed to my car to get my luggage back at my car. She passed while I was walking to the parking garage.

Thanks for updating. Condolences for your loss. Sounds like a pretty good ending, all things considered. They’ll sneak off like that when you’re not right there. Mine waited until I had to be out of town on a one way business trip. You did right by your Mom.
