But then on top of that horrifying hem length, the fit seems off? Not as bad as a few other examples, but the puckering around her midsection can't just be about the fabric and her posture (she always stands like that, and she's not that slouched). I feel like maybe in getting the bodice to fit perfectly (which it does), it throws off the rest of the dress and maybe indicates that this was just the wrong pull for her generally. The neckline is nice on her but the rest is just not.
I like the color on her -- with her dark skin she can pull off this shade of pale gold. In general, I hate it when all the pale skinned women wear those washed out neutrals -- it looks so bad on them. (I'm a pale skinned white woman, and I know not to wear pale beige!). I love the top of the dress, but I agree that the midsection fit seems off -- I'm also not crazy about how the trimming thing widens as it goes down.
To me the issue with the color isn't that it's unflattering in her. It's just boring. I think it would bother me more if there hadn't been so much of it on the red carpet. This is a big event, it's a chance to make a statement. This dress doesn't.

Oh gosh I LOVED her in The Holdovers and I am so happy she won - but that dress was making me so nervous. I worried she was one deep breath away from spilling right out of it! (I don't have much in the way of boobs so perhaps my anxiety was misplaced - maybe anyone with boobs would know that she was secure in there.)

I am tired of this hairstyle on her and I really, really wish she'd pulled some of the color from the skirt into her jewelry or makeup. Like I'm imagining some pink or green near her face. I feel like it's a really wasted opportunity to create a really beautiful look. I never say this about Portman but it kind of feels like the dress is wearing her here. She looks checked out (and maybe is, it's been a weird year for her, so kudos to her for doing her job with regards to her new movie which looks good though I have not seen it).

But it feels so casual and business-y. I think it's the color of the pants. Beige strikes again! I'm imagining this with a really rich navy for the pants and I think it's better.
This is not good. I'm all for women wearing pants and wearing comfy clothes, but this just doesn't look good in any way. I hate the pants -- color, fit, length, everything. The jacket is a nice color but looks like it's so tight around her neck.
The shape of the pants and the piping down the front are not good. Could’ve done a better lower half with the same jacket. But they probably don’t really care, so it’s fine.

I dunno... member of the big boobed club here and those things are heavy. They look like are sitting securely on a shelf.

Hard disagree. She looks amazing.
