I loved Samantha on Sex and the City and I love her name. If I were still having babies it would be on my list.

I love Samantha and Sam and I don't think it's dated.

Classic, great name.

My sister teaches ES and there are several in the school. She thinks it is making a comeback.

I know a woman who goes by Sam and I love it. I associate it with her: she is so fun and spunky and, honestly, gorgeous.

I have a cousin about OP's age named Samantha, goes by Sammi.
I'm older (born in 1975) and I associate Samantha with the "Who's the boss?" character. Despite that, I really love the name. It's so pretty.
