I always pay or see about rescheduling that same week - it’s the cost of doing business. Our cleaner has asked me twice in eight years if she can work another day that week and has never cancelled.

I also pay when we are out of town and see it as vacation pay. It’s usually 1x in spring, 2x in summer, and 1-2x in December. I provide a year-end bonus on top of the vacation pay. If we were to move away, I would provide a severance payment.

My goal has always been to treat an employee in our home in the same way I want I want to be treated in the work place.

I think of it in two week increments, sort of like a timesheet. I try to make it so my cleaners (independent) can count on the money from our house, as I assume she needs to budget. I try to reschedule within the week. If it’s not possible, then I pay. When she has canceled, I don’t pay.

We have an individual and always pay. We paid for the months we asked her not to come during Covid. Occasionally she reschedules us to a different day and that’s fine but if we cancel and she can’t fit us in another time we still pay. We don’t expect her to give us a make up day since we know she has a full schedule.

My cleaner is flexible and so am I, so I reschedule and buy her a small thank you gift. I reschedule 2-3x/year, usually well in advance.

No I don't but it goes both ways. Some weeks she needs to reschedule and some weeks I do. We're both pretty flexible on finding a time to clean.

This. We use a service and they will let us pay a lesser amount that just goes to pay the cleaners and doesn't include their up-charge.

Thanks, all! My instinct to pay seems correct, glad so many people confirmed.

No. I don’t.

Absolutely. It’s a lot of money for them. I’m shocked at the people that don’t. This isn’t like a random babysitter with no set hours.

Anonymous wrote:If I cancel with less than a day's notice, I pay. If I cancel in advance, I do not pay. However, if I am canceling in advance, I always try to reschedule for another day or time, but generally, she cannot accommodate - which I completely understand, but then I am not paying.

+1.

Same. Though we do try to reschedule if we can find a mutually agreeable time within a few days.

+1 totally agree
