This. There is no reserving a machine. If someone’s belongings are in the way, they will get moved. Your friend was rude and in the wrong. I’d have done the same as him, and I’m a woman.

Putting a bag on the gym floor is much worse than grabbing a machine while someone isn’t there. Stop being precious about “sticky” machines and just do your workout.

I can’t believe how many people get all worked up about gym bags. I will be blocking the equipment much longer if I have to go to the lockers every time I need something (different shoes, belt, sleeves, straps, chalk, bands..). People who lift heavy tend to use a lot of gear and it is just practical to have the bag with me at all times. I make sure it is not in anyone’s way and so do other people who bring their stuff. No one ever tripped on my bag. When it comes to OP’s actual question I also don’t like when people reserve machines with their stuff but she just literally went to grab a wipe. I would have waited a few seconds and asked her if I could work in.

Ok NP here and new gym goer. When I’m done with a machine or bench, I’ll put my phone on it while I grab a wipe or spray to clean it off for the next person. Is that rude?

In general, I think this is a non-issue. But, the man could have waited the 30 seconds it took for your friend to grab a wipe. How long could that have possibly taken?

As to the bag on the gym floor again, I posted above that you need to see what your gym’s policy is on this because at my gym, because of safety, no bags are allowed on the floor and they provide lockers

As someone who goes to the gym all the time, he was in the wrong. It's very odd that he moved her bag and once you said your friend was using it he should have asked if he could work in and do a set while she was gone instead of just jumping on.

Lies! What's happening is people leaving their items in unlocked lockers. I highly doubt that in a public locker room there are women lurking with wire cutters, cutting locks off of lockers and stealing items WHILE there are people present or in the gym. Lies!

Yep - the manager should have been notified. Notified that some idiot is "marking their territory" with a hazardous duffle bag. Throw those two bums out!

Disagree about what's gym etiquette. I always look for a towel or marker before getting on a machine/station.

There is more to this story. I bet that gym bag marks a lot of machines on a lot of days.

I cannot stand people who "mark" the machines as "theirs" by putting down their sweaty towel, water bottle, and in your case a duffle bag which is a really bizarre thing to do. I don't care who you are - no one needs to carry around a duffle bag in the gym. When I see people do this, I move their crap.Your friend was wrong, period.
