DD has similar academic stats w national athletic ranking and is deferred.
She is not a legacy. Even without donation or minimum donation, legacy still matter when all are equal.

The only kids I know who got in were either rich Chicago private school kids or from states that don’t send them many applications.

I posted about my child getting in and being a legacy. The most I have ever donated is $50, so I can definitely say that was zero factor in the admission decision!

NP. Most universities consider legacy separate from the big donor category.
A university considering small donation patterns of a legacy seems to be less common at highly selective universities. I doubt NU does this.
NU does not really consider legacy or "donations". Unless that donation is extremely large. $1K/year is not going to matter. Most they will do is "courtesy deferral" and string your high stats kid along until April
So, a high stats legacy admit shouldn't feel that they only got in due to a hook?
