My MIL made an equally judgmental comment about my tattoo. It's one that my siblings and I got together after our parents died. You don't know the people you're judging and it makes zero impact on your lives. Maybe they're symbolic, maybe they just like butterflies, maybe the sleeve is covering up another tattoo of their ex-wife's name, maybe it's names of their dead children, maybe they just want a tramp stamp, who cares. I can't believe this not-a-topic has become a 3 page thread of people complaining about complete strangers. 🙄

Someone who regretted her tattoos put it to me this way: say you have a favorite shirt. You love seeing it, you love how you feel in it, it makes you happy. But even if you love it, would you want to wear it EVERY DAY for the rest of your life? No! Even something you love gets old. I thought that was a good perspective and it kept me from getting a tattoo.

Tattoo ink is not regulated by the FDA. There are few long term studies on the effects or risks, like whether pigment can migrate to your organs or even brain. I wonder about people who say they have chronic illnesses and are also heavily tattooed. There’s no way injecting yourself with unregulated dye improves your health, but could it be actually harmful? I wish people thought this through.

I also think tattoos are ugly. Their popularity nowadays is just one more example of how civilization is in decline.

Some of us grew up when only biker gangs and prisoners had them. They make my skin crawl. The worst are sleeves.

You grew up with all kinds of other stuff that you all seem okay with, that makes my skin crawl. The worst is racism? Or open misogyny? Homophobia? How about all those ridiculous habits? Like smoking in the house and giving your kids cancer?

DC is probably one of the last major cities where ink is light. West coast people are doing crazy sh&t like tit tattoos, neck tattoos, etc worst!

I noticed the increasing tattoo everywhere too though I can’t tell if these people are under or over 30. They look ugly and dirty, IMO. I read that tattoo can impact one’s appearance in an interview for a professional job.

The Jew no-tattoo thing is an old myth that conservative parents tell their children.

My teenaged daughter has declared that she will never get a tattoo because they are "basic" and she wants to be unique. I had hoped that meant the trend was fading, but her friends are starting to get them, so maybe not. Because said friends have tattoo expectations without the tattoo funds, every last one of them is badly done and looks like trash. I can appreciate a skilled work of art in any medium. These are notebook doodles at best, permanently rendered on perfect young skin. I think it's profoundly sad.
