This is ridiculous. All 15 members of the family can’t go on a cruise because OP has crippling anxiety and had a bad experience once?

How many years ago was your cruise? Ships have become more stable. I mean, no, they can't account for terrible weather, but overall sailing is smoother, IMO.

There are also so many seasick products...patches, bracelets/bands, glasses, etc. now compared to even 15 years ago.


Oh jeez, it was probably 2005? So yes a long time ago.

I watched a YouTube video and it does look really nice. I’m gonna buckle up, get some Zofran & Xanax and make it happen.

It does sound like a great experience. It would be DHs entire side and we all get along great. The kids adore their cousins and would truly have a blast.

What’s holding us back? I have a horrible phobia of cruise ships. I went on one cruise when I was 22 and it was hell on earth. I’ll spare you the details but I ended up so terribly sick I had to be hospitalized and almost didn’t graduate on time. Since then I’ve had a fear of any boat, but especially cruise ships. I know many people will tell me to get over it but the fear runs deep and I’m already sweating thinking about it. I’m also not comfortable having my kids go without me (even if DH attends). Yes, I’m generally a very anxious person.

I feel terrible turning it down. We probably won’t, but I don’t want to be a mess worrying about it for the next 3.5 months. Would you just do it? Has anyone been on one? If you aren’t a cruise person what are your thoughts?


DP. Trapped on a ship with your in-laws for a week? Yeah, that's a fishbowl.

Wish. Which my in-laws said was suppose to be amazing and I’ve heard good things. I have no doubt my kids will have a blast I just don’t want to get to a headspace where I can enjoy it too.


The Wish is the newest and does the shortest itineraries. You will be just fine, OP. Enjoy Castaway Cay - it's my favorite!

My husband swore we weren’t cruise people and kvetched about how this would be a terrible mistake. Long story short: we are taking our 7th cruise over winter break.

Disney cruises are fun. If you are worried about germs, use purell.

Carnival is the polar opposite of Disney. It's the Spirit Airlines of the sea. I am a travel agent and will not sell Carnival to my clients. I've been on 12 cruises with Disney. It will be fine.

I also suffer from generalized anxiety and I used to get terrible seasickness on cruise ships. But I noticed the newer ships feel much different. I barely notice when we are moving. Anyway, I love cruises (and I did even when I’d get sea sick).

My recommendation is therapy, increase anxiety meds, get a bunch of anti-motion sickness remedies (scopolamine patches from your doctor, wrist bands, otc Dramamine, etc…). Yes, you’ll probably feel groggy during the cruise but better that than motion sickness!

This sounds like a deep seated irrational fear, possibly combined with PTSD from your illness experience - so I'm not sure any comments here will help. (Does it help you to know that our family has been on a dozen Disney cruises and loves them?) You need coping strategies and therapy. You need to have a game plan to get you grounded in a stressful-to-you situation, and get used to being on a ship again. Unless you just want to let the kids and husband go without you. It would be criminal to turn down the gift of a Disney cruise with the whole family where everyone gets along great.

I got seasick from day 1. The cruise ship was old and one of the stabilizers broke and it was so choppy even seasoned cruisers were struggling. I also felt very trapped and things felt dirty. Then on the last day I ended up with what was later diagnosed as e. Coli. It was AWFUL.


Oh goodness. That's a recipe for disaster and I don't blame you for your anxiety. I'm a pp above who has been on four Disney cruises. They are very very good about cleanliness and I highly doubt you'll think the ship is dirty.
