I’ve seen flip phone work for an ES mom friend. Her ES kid does a billion activities and so does younger sister. They’re always dropping off and picking up - a phone is good.

I’ve heard my kids say things like, “I would rather have no phone than a tablet” when she started 6th.

She even resents the Troomi we got her, because it is not an iPhone, it is an android, which is the nerdy thing to have apparently.

Btw, it isn’t branded with the word Troomi or anything. It’s just a typical android. They install a layer of software on there that allows you to control tons and tons and tons of aspects. Location sharing too.

Honestly, my kid is not one who cares what other kids think, and even tends to deliberately go against the grain most of the time. If the teasing about her flip phone in 6th was enough for her to mention it to us, even in passing, it must have been bad. She said she couldn’t even pretend she was using it ironically. She wasn’t too bothered by it, but I’m sure a kid who was more sensitive about fitting it would have a rough time of it. This was at a high-FARMS middle school in MCPS.

The flip phone was mainly so she could prove she could be responsible with a phone, so toward the tend of 6th I gave her my old iPhone SE and locked it down as much as possible. It’s easy enough to lock out the apps during the school day, require approval to download new apps, and monitor usage from my iPhone.

But we kept the flip phone, and told her if she abused the privilege she’d have to go back to the flip phone. She never did!
