We live in NW DC in a townhome. I would like to find a live in nanny/housekeeper. She would have our whole basements to herself/her family. It’s a separate 2 bedroom apartment with own bathroom and kitchen. I would like her to clean our house once a week and take care of my 3 kids from 3-6. She would have to drive to pick up the kids at school and take them to activities. I would also like for her to make dinner for the kids. I would not charge rent or utilities and pay her $20/hr. 15 hours of baby sitting per week and 4-5 hours of cleaning per week so 20 hours total.

Would someone be interested in this deal?


I think they need more hours because that’s the only $20,800, before taxes. That’s not much to live on. The living arrangement seems good. I think if you increase the hours you’ll find somebody.

I think your goal is for the person to have another job so that this is some kind of a side gig, which might be possible if they got a house cleaning job other mornings but I think you have to find the right person.

I would do it except for the cleaning part. I have another part time job in NW DC that is 9-2pm so this would be perfect for me. I need a place to live. I’m single with a small dog. I don’t mind doing laundry and straightening up but I’m terrible with actual cleaning. I’m also not a great cook. But I’m great with kids.

This was my idea too. Some people also brought over their mom/grandmas who are still young (50s) and are looking for a place for them to live and work since they may not have space for them at their homes. Yo can also post on Russian Moms DC group. (Group for Russian speakers and many Ukrainian immigrants there too.)


I’m a member of that group and it’s true that many find their nannies through that group but this pool normally doesn’t drive or speak English.

This is something I would’ve liked as a college student. I lived in for a year, and worked 5-9 on 4 weekdays, Sunday morning and Saturday night. I didn’t have to clean other days though, but I worked my classes around that schedule. I agree with PPs that you won’t find someone who needs an additional full paying job or benefits for this.

Post this in a local Ukrainian group on Facebook (like Ukrainian Ladies of DC). A Ukrainian refugee with limited English may be your best bet.

OP here. Thank you. I was just trying to get an idea of whether there would be interest. I might still try to post and see what I actually get. Otherwise I will continue what we have been doing with our current nanny.

Rent out your basement. Use that income to supplement what you want to pay nanny and hire separate house cleaner. You will still need to spend more than you think but you might actually find people.

the problem is, you only want to pay for hours the nanny is actually doing something. however, the timing of those hours is such that her whole day is blocked. i had a similar situation and basically paid 8 hours a day, covering hours i actually needed and giving her stuff to do for the rest of the day. she can cook more clean more etc. but do/pay 40 hours.
